Maine mass killing suspect had mental health issues, purchased guns legally, authorities say

The shooter, identified as Robert Card, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had a history of mental illness, including hearing voices and expressing a desire to harm others. Card had not been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility, and a simple evaluation or voluntary commitment would not have prohibited him from owning a gun.
